The Department of Railway (DORW) falls under the Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport (MOPIT). The main goal of the DORW is to help in policy formulation, development, and expansion of railway infrastructure and provide suggestions on railway services operation. network in Nepal.  The only passenger train service in Nepal is operated by Nepal Railway between Jaynagar in India to Bhangha (Dhanusa) in Nepal. It covers 51.136 km between the two stations. This section is under further extension up to Bardibas of Mahottari District adding further 16km rail track, and the construction of this project is underway.  Nepal also has two other rail connectivity with India that are used for cargo transport. A 6 KM long broad-gauge track connects the Indian town of Raxaul to Birgunj ICD in Nepal and an eight KM track connects Bathnaha of India to Biratnagar ICP in Nepal.  

Railway Companies and Consortia 

Rail transport of Nepal is managed by the state-run Nepal Railways Corporation Ltd. Some of the future projects outlined by the Nepal Railways Corporation Ltd are as follows: 

• The East-West Railway Line: An alternative mode of transportation to traverse east to west of the country relieving pressure on East-West highway. 

• Raxaul–Birgunj-Kathmandu: Upgrade and Extension of existing railway line to connect Kathmandu. 

• Nepal signed a framework agreement in 2017 to explore the feasibility to connect Nepal with Lhasa, Tibet, China via Kerung, Rasuwa a northern border point.
