The city of Biratnagar is 7 kilometres (4 mi) north of Nepal's southern border with Biharstate, India. Indian and Nepalese nationals cross freely as the border is open for local movement. The checkpoint is under the joint oversight of Armed Police Force along with Local Police unit for overall security and Biratnagar Customs Office for administrative and record keeping responsibilities.  

 

Jogbani town in ArariaDistrict is on the Indian side, where a rail line ends at Jogbani Station (JBN) under Katihar Division of Northeast Frontier railways. Nepal’s eastern border of Kakarbhitta lies at a distance of 108 kilometres (67.5 mi) from the city and can be reached via frequent buses running half-hourly from the city's bus park

 

Biratnagar is the 4th largest border crossing point, with 11.57% share of total import value (ref: customs.gov.np). 

 

Biratnagar Custom Office is opened for passengers and local customers for purchasing of goods of maximun NPR 5000 per person only. No cargo transports are allowed to enter from this point except mini private cars, vehicles. This border crossing had a significant importance for trade, commerce, and the movement of people between Nepal and India. But after the operation of ICP all the cargo crosses the border via ICP, Buddhanagar to Nepal. 

 

It has 9 sub-customs offices which are as follows: Mayaganj, Rangeli, Diniya, Madhumalla, , Tariga, Kadamaha, Chuniwari, Doria and Chowkighat Sub Customs Office.

Customs Clearance 

No import/export customs clearance procedure is conducted at this point. Only passengers are allowed to cross from this border area. All the cargos are diverted to ICP Buddhanagr and crosses the border point after clearing all customs procedures through ICP Biratnagar Customs office. 

As this border point used as for only immigration purposes. Vehicles and means of transport that are temporarily crosses from India will be subjected to customs duties as per the scheduled below:  

  • Motorcycles and scooters NPR 200.00 

  • Three-Wheeled vehicle      NPR 400.00 

  • Including tractor tailor       NPR 500.00 

  • Cars, Jeep Vans, Minibuses and other tourist vehicles NPR 600 

  • Trailor, trucks and other vehicles NPR 1700 

  • Excavator, Dozer, Loader, Roller, JCB  and Crane used in construction work NPR 1700.
