Nepal - 2.6 Storage Assessment

Nepal - 2.6 Storage Assessment

While Nepal has an abundance of low-volume storage for the commercial sector. Large-scale warehousing for the humanitarian community is more difficult to locate.  The Food Management and Trading Company (FMTC), previously Nepal Food Corporation, appears to be the largest provider of warehousing capacity for rent, but the availability of their facilities is linked to the harvest season of paddy.

For more information on storage company contact details, please see the following link: 4.6 Storage and Milling Companies Contact List

Humanitarian Staging Area

World Food Programme (WFP) with funding support from the Unite Kingdom’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) and Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), in close collaboration with the Government of Nepal (GoN) has successfully established Humanitarian Staging Area (HSA) at Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) in Kathmandu, six Provincial Humanitarian Staging Areas (PHSAs) in five provinces namely: Koshi Province (Biratnagar), Madhesh Province (Birgunj), Lumbini Province (Bhairahawa and Nepalgunj), Karnali Province (Surkhet) and Sudurpaschim Province (Dhangadhi) and Mobile Humanitarian Staging Areas (MHSAs) in four districts, namely: Baitadi, Jumla, Mahottari and Terhathum. The purpose of these facilities is to enhance the emergency preparedness and response capacity of GoN and the humanitarian community. The HSA has been managed on behalf of Ministry of Home Affairs (MoHA) by WFP on a full cost-recovery basis, overseen by a user-group steering committee.

In the event of crises, the National logistics cluster of the country activates the HSA’s and initiates logistics services to fill gaps. Updates on the requirement to procure services can be attained through Log cluster’s page dedicated to Nepal.
