Port Overview:

The Port of Beira is the second largest port in Moçambique and is located about 1,200 kms north of Maputo, midway along the Moçambique coast at the mouth of the Pungue River and is 20 km from the open sea

• Beira has always been a transit port, handling the import and export cargoes for Malawi, Zimbabwe, Zambia and DRC
• Anchorage for shallow draft vessels is situated at Franquia near the entrance
• There is no pilotage or night navigation authorized between sunset and sunrise further restricting accessibility to the port
• The approach to the Pungue River is obstructed by sandbanks and shoals which are constantly moving, the channel is dredged to a width of 135 m which has buoys and lighting
• There is a vessel berthing draft restriction at Beira port of 6 m and a maximum of 8.5 m and a length restriction is 190 m
• Tides are an issue as vessels can wait for many days at anchorage before entering the Macuti Channel to berth at Beira Port

Please note: In July 2010 a 12 month dredging operation commenced which will increase the draft to a maximum of 14 m which will then allow for vessel arrival and departure, 24-hours a day which will greatly increase the port performance

Port Security

• On a regular basis, Cornelder Port authorities report that containers are stolen from the port and container doors are broken day and night. The authorities told the port users to wear jackets with the name of their company, to carry an ID card and to provide a list of persons who are authorized to enter in the port. But it is not sufficient and there are no armed guards at the port
• In 2009 WFP reported that when break bulk cargo was received, it was frequent that stevedores stole vegetable oil and rice by throwing the bags and cartons into the sea water where a small boat waiting to receive stolen items. WFP requested that Cornelder provide armed guards at quay side at night and the robbery subsequently stopped
• Cornelder port authorities took the decision to install cameras in and around the port and Cornelder is liaising with the local police to have day and night patrols as well as armed policemen during loading/offloading operations
