Airport Overview

Maya-Maya Airport (IATA: BZV, ICAO: FCBB) is an airport located in Brazzaville the capital of the Republic of the Congo (only a few kilometres from the city centre). It is the main airport of the country.  In 2015, the airport served 1,300,000 passengers and international flights are available with several air companies including Air France, ASKY, Ethiopian Airlines, Kenya Airways, South Africa airlines, Air Cote d’Ivoire and Royal Air Maroc, TAAG, Rwanda Air, as well as other cargo airlines like Ethiopians air lines. Other than commercial operators, UNHAS (humanitarian flight) operates its own flights between Brazzaville and Impfondo – Betou via RDC. Those flights are reserved to all UN staffs/NGOs, exceptionally available for government members.  Cargo flights serve Maya Maya airport to deliver fresh food. For cargo handling the operation has been commissioned to Congo Handling, which is a subsidiary of the French based Group Europe Handling, while the refuelling operations are operated by SNPC. The access to the Airport is very easy with a two-lane road leading to the main terminal. Different shipping and forwarding companies have their office at the airport.  A customs office is also present.

Passenger and Cargo Performance Indicator

In 2015, the airport served 1,300,000 passengers. In 2010, a new runway 3300m long (05L/23R) and a new terminal, with three air bridges were opened. The older runway (05R/23L) was repaired and now is used as a taxiway. A second module for the new terminal was completed in 2013. Chinese construction firm Weihai International Economic & Technical Cooperative Co., Ltd. performed the $160 million in upgrades to the airport. The current monthly use by humanitarian flights (UNHAS) is approximately 10 flights per month (3,000 passengers).

Runways

There are two runways at the Maya-Maya International Airport. The second runway is the former runway 05R/23L which is repaired and now is used as a taxiway.

Helicopter Pad(s)

There are no proper helicopter pads at Maya Maya airport. Helicopters land at runway and hover to the parking space or land directly on the field near the aircraft parking area.

Airport Infrastructure Details

The new terminal was inaugurated in 2011. There is considerable improvement compared to the old and largely under dimensioned terminal. Presently the check-in area is in a good conditions. The level of maintenance of the equipment is good.

Airport Operating Details

The regulation of the civil aviation in the Republic of Congo falls under the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation and ANAC is the Government agency that manages and administers the airports. For the airspace security and navigation of aircraft the responsibility has been commissioned to ASECNA.  It is a regional company that manages the aviation security of several African airports including Brazzaville and Pointe-Noire. Among its tasks is to assure:

1. Control of the airspace circulation
2. Guidance of airplanes
3. Transmission of technical and traffic messages
4. Information about flight arrivals/departures
5. Meteorological information
6. Guidance of flights inside the airport and terminal approaches
   1. Fire emergency service

Storage Facilities

For cargo handling the operation has been commissioned to Congo Handling, which is a subsidiary of the French based Group Europe Handling. Two bonded warehouses of 500 m² are located inside the airport and managed by Congo Handling. For cargo handling, 2 forklifts of 2.5 mt capacity and one of 7 mt capacity are available.

Navigation Charges

Night landing hours are between 18:00 – 6,00 hours. Parking charges are for each hours or part there of; first 2 hours free. These charges are administered by the ANAC & ASECNA and are the same for all airports in the Republic of Congo. From 26 mt and upwards each weight class fee comes on top of the former one. Over flight fees depends on route and can be very fluctuant.

Fuel Service Charges 

Aircrafts are served by tank trucks and there is also a single point for refuelling. The price for Jet A-1 is presently XAF 600/litre.  ANAC is also charging a fuel service fee of XAF 3.40/litre.

Cargo Terminal Charges

There is no tariff for handling charges which must be negotiated with the cargo handling company either on a case by case basis, or in a contractual form. Price level will depend on frequency of flights. Some standard examples are given below.

• Toilet Service per Aircraft: XAF 215,000
• Push-back per operation: XAF 157,000 – 367,000 (4 categories)
• Trailer/dolly per operation: included in handling charge
