Port Overview

The port of Monywa consists of three locations at the river bank of the Chindwin river near town, used for passengers and general cargo, plus a river bank 2km outside town which is used mainly for timber trade. There are no berths or jetties, vessels moor directly at the river bank and use gangways. From Monywa the Chindwin river goes South to Pakokku, and North to Ta-Naing in Kachin state, via Kalewa.

Description and Contacts of Key Companies

Inland Water Transport is responsible for registering port operations, but general cargo and passenger transport is managed by private companies. The main companies operating at Monywa are for general cargo: Aung Soe Moe Co., Chin Twin Gyi Co., Yae Zar Ni Co., and for passengers: Ayi Nyein Chan Thar Co., Shew Na Dazayar Co., and Moe Zin Yaw Co.,

Vessels for general cargo range from 30MT to 80MT capacity and most are individually operated and booked.

Located at the timber port is a transport company with 5 vessels and 14 trucks: Aung Mya Than Co., they have 5 landing vessels; 2 of 200MT (128x32x5.5ft draft), 1 of 300MT (165x32x5.5ft draft) and 2 of 700MT (200x50x9ft draft), Contact: Mr. Myo Win, Director, phone: +95-9-2131777.

Port Performance

Port performance in 2019 was approximately 40 vessels visit per day, average 1000 vessels per month. About 1,800 MT of cargo per month, mostly construction materials (cement, iron, corrugated sheets, food).

Discharge Rates and Terminal Handling Charges

The below are vessel docking charges MMK per vessel per visit period, charged by a private company under supervision of Directorate of Water Resources and Improvement of River System (DWRIRS).

Below 20 HP engine

• 200 MMK (small boat),
• 400 MMK (below 30 ft length of boat)
• 600 MMK (between 30~50 ft length of boat)

More than 20 HP Engine

• 700 MMK (20~ 30 MT capacity),
• 1200 MMK (30~40 MT capacity)

Big Vessel (40 and over HP Engine)

• 1,500 MMK (40~60 MT capacity),
• 2,000 MMK (60~80 capacity),
• 2,500 MMK (80~100 MT capacity),
• 4,500 MMK (100~200 MT capacity),
• 5,500 MMK (more than 200 MT capacity)

Ships are charged a standard fee for the use of the waterway by the Directorate of Water Resources and Improvement of River System (DWRIRS), under the Ministry of Transport & Communications. DWRIRS charges 0.20 Kyat/MT capacity/mile, per trip (rate as of Jun 2016). This is charged at the river stations Twantay, Nyaungdong, Pyay, Magway, Mandalay and Kathar and for the Chindwin river at Monywa and Kalewa.

Stevedoring

All loading and offloading activities are manually performed. Daily workers are arranged through the labour exchange office at the port. The daily labour rates are as follows:

• 2,000 MMK/MT for unskilled labour (only loading and offloading)
• 5000-8,000 MMK/day for unskilled labour
• 8,000-12,000 MMK/day for skilled labour. (includes record keeping, tally counting and managing stack)

Hinterland Information

There is a connection to roads at the general cargo/passenger and timber port. No railway connection is available.

Port Security

There is no port security and no perimeter fencing.
