Overview
More than one million tons of fresh fruits and vegetables are produced annually, with 80 percent of the total production taking place in individual households. Ninety percent of locally processed fruits and vegetables is exported.
Moldova offers a large range of agricultural products, such as fruits, vegetables, grains, and livestock. Basic crops include winter and spring grains (wheat, barley, maize), sunflowers, sugar beet, potatoes and other root vegetables, horticultural crops, and fruits.
Moldova’s vegetable crops include tomatoes, onions, cabbage, cucumbers, pumpkins, peppers, carrots, red beets, garlic, squash, eggplants, potherbs, and green peas. Fruit production concentrates on apples, plums, sweet and sour cherries, pears, peaches & nectarines, quinces, apricots, soft fruit, walnuts, and table and wine grapes.
It is to be noted that the warehousing infrastructure is weak within the country, prompting farmers to sell as soon as they produce. And as such there are no substantial national infrastructures to sell to for farmers. According to the World Bank, this translates to massive import of food from the neighbouring countries such as Ukraine, Romania, Germany, Poland, Turkey ect. The dependence on import constitutes a threat to local food system. However, should a crisis arise, strong food systems from countries such as Romania and Turkey with whom Moldova has strong ties would supply the demand.
However, no issues of stock replenishment were identified despite this need to shift from sourcing some products from Russia, Ukraine and Belarus to Europe. Products assortment and availability is also high, and all assessed retailers reported ability to easily cope with a potential 15-20% demand increase. This shift and rising oil prices have increased operating costs however, business continuity is assured and the impact of operating costs on retail prices remains controlled by government ceiling rates on essential items
No replenishment issues have been reported by retailers, and all have reliable network of suppliers across Europe to ensure no supply disruption. Prices of essential goods are controlled and stabilised by government with ceiling rate.
