Moldova - 2.5 Waterways Assessment
Home

Overview

The Republic of Moldova has two inland waterways of international importance of category E, classified in accordance with the provisions of the European Agreement on the Main Inland Waterways of International Importance, to which the Republic of Moldova is a party, as well as access to the Black Sea, through the maritime section of the Danube River at km 133.8 (maritime mile 72.2).
Although river ports still exist at Ungheni (Prut) and at Varnița (Nistru), they do not offer loading services. As such, navigation in these rivers is limited, something especially true for passenger transport. Therefore, in terms of transport of cargo, the Giurgiulesti International Free Port is the country’s main port connecting Moldova to the Black Sea through the Danube River.

As a specialized central body, the Ministry of Infrastructure and Regional Development develops policies in the field of waterborne transport in the Republic of Moldova and implements them through the Naval Agency. The priority of the Ministry in the field of waterborne transport is to align national legislation with the European one, as well as to honour the commitments undertaken within the framework of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) on issues related to:

  • Maritime safety, port state, classification societies
  • Market functioning
  • River information services
  • Flag state
  • Environment protection
  • Maritime security
  • Port state control
  • Maritime traffic monitoring
  • Liability of passenger carriers
  • Technical and operational rules
