Overview

With Myanmar economic growth expected to continue, the retail and wholesale sector is likely to continue to expand in 2016 and beyond. However the Myanmar retail sector is still highly fragmented with more than 90% of its business being carried out by traditional family-run small stores. 70% of the population of Myanmar live in rural areas (2014 Myanmar census), with mostly access to market stands and individually/family owned stores that have a limited selection of products. The majority of consumers in urban areas still rely on wet markets and grocery shops for their food needs. In general the retail sector does not offer or use credit. Poor infrastructure and high transport costs negatively impact the price of local food crops, while old milling equipment results in low quality broken rice.

Main Food Suppliers

Myanmar has rice, beans and pulses available on the local market, including suppliers of non-food items for the humanitarian sector such as plastic sheeting, jerry cans, cooking utensils. Rice is the staple food consumed in Myanmar. Corn and wheat-based food products are consumed much less. Popularity of instant noodles, such as Yum Yum, Ma Ma and Wai Wai brands, has been growing.

Key agricultural products produced locally and exported are rice, beans and pulses. Fortified edible oil, such as used by World Food Programme, cannot be procured in Myanmar. Ready to Eat products and fortified high-energy biscuits for the humanitarian sector are not commonly available. Fortified Corn Soya Blend (CSB or Super Cereal) cannot be found on the local market. Rice Soya Blend (RSB) is produced locally by United New Generation company.

Accommodation

Hotel accommodation and housing can be found easily but at higher cost as in neighbouring East Asian countries. In the tourist high season (November to February) there can be a shortage of hotel rooms, especially in Yangon. Housing can be found through real estate agents and brokers.

Additional Operational Support

Humanitarian support items (non-food items) such as tents, water pumps, pipes, water tanks, jerry cans, blankets, plastic sheeting, office furniture, cooking utensils are readily available on the local market to meet local demand. Some items, such as blankets and plastic sheeting, are locally produced. But other items, such as tents, jerry cans and buckets may be imported from China, India or Thailand due to competitive a price and quality. In case of emergencies local stock of humanitarian support items would probably be exhausted quickly, but can be quickly replenished from suppliers in the neighbour countries China and India.
