Overview

Food is readily available and there is significant number of producers and major retailers able to provide food commodities in the country.  Suppliers have locations for collection of commodities direct from farms and production facilities primarily in the north and east.  Food Reserve Agency (FRA) is the national strategic grain reserve and holds primarily maize in its facilities throughout the country.  Milled commodities particularly maize is available in every market.  Most millers have both a processing plant and retail stores.  Fortification is not widespread and there is no national policy. There is an oil plant in Lusaka and several sugar producers.  Other commodities are available on the market.

Retail Sector

There are several retailers that have a major presence in the region such as Shoprite, and Game that provide a wide range of grocery and general goods and services.

Wholesale - ETG – Export Trading Co Ltd (Lusaka)

ETG has been operating in Lusaka and deal primarily with maize which makes up 80% of its activity, soya beans, groundnuts and pigeon peas. They are part of the ETG group in the Southern Africa region (Zambia, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Tanzania, Kenya, Malawi, and South Africa), and are a major shareholders of Quality Commodities who produce Supercereal (CSB).
