Yangon international Airport (RGN) was built in 1947 and expanded in May 2007. The old terminal is used exclusively for domestic flights, and the new terminal handles international flights. The airport was designed to handle 2.7 million passengers a year but is currently over its annual capacity, having accepted 3.1 million in 2012. Nine domestic airlines and about 26 international airlines operate out of Yangon International, serving 20 regional destinations. Overall design and detailing was carried out in 2011 to meet IATA service standards and to comply with ICAO safety and security standards. In 2013, a contract worth Usd 150 million to upgrade and expand the capacity of Yangon International Airport was awarded to a consortium led by an affiliate of Asia World. Construction of a new domestic terminal and expand the airport apron is scheduled to be completed in 2015, expanding it’s capacity to 5.5 million passengers a year. Other features include:

  • Automated baggage handling system, integrated check-in system
  • Four air bridges, capable of handling four Boeing 747s
  • Two-story car park with spaces for 340 vehicles.
  • A customs warehouse
  • Mingalardon cargo terminal, operated by Mingalardon Cargo Services

The government plans to move air cargo services to the new Hanthawaddy International Airport, located in Bago region 80km from Yangon, upon its completion in 2018.
