Port Performance

The Sirte Oil Company operates Port Marsa El Brega. Basically an off-shore oil terminal, the primary cargoes handled in Port Marsa El Brega are crude oil and oil and petrochemical products as well as some general cargo. About 300 vessels call at Port Marsa El Brega each year. In the harbor, Port Marsa El Brega can accommodate vessels to 220 meters long with draft of 10 meters. The sealines can handle vessels to 300 thousand DWT with unrestricted length and draft. Designated anchorage at Port Marsa El Brega is a 3-nautical-mile diameter circle about 6.5 nautical miles from the entrance to the harbor. Depths there are from 20 meters to over 70 meters. Tidal range varies around 0.5 meters. Port Marsa El Brega has two tugs with 2400 horsepower available. The west side of Port Marsa El Brega has a dry cargo berth of 150 meters with alongside depth of 7.9 meters. The east side has the Urea jetty at 200 meters long alongside depth of 8.8 meters. Port Marsa El Brega’s Cargo jetty is 200 meters long with alongside depth of 9.2 meters, and it can accommodate vessels to 15 thousand DWT.

Roll-on/roll-off vessels berth beside the jetty or to the stern of the dry cargo jetty. Tanker berths include three sealine berths: a product tanker quay, a liquefied gas quay, and an acid quay. There are also two jetties for methanol and ammonia. Sealine Berth No. 2 in Port Marsa El Brega can accommodate vessels up to 55 thousand DWT and to 243 meters long with draft of 12.8 meters. Vessels anchor, stern secured to five mooring buoys in 13.4 meters of water. A hose loads naphtha at a rate of 3300 tons per hour. Port Marsa El Brega’s Sealine Berths No. 5 and 6 accommodate vessels to 300 thousand DWT with no draft restrictions. Vessels moor in 40 meters of water, and crude oil is loaded via a 16-inch hose with a capacity for 7600 tons per hour. The Gas Quay Docks A and B in Port Marsa El Brega are 320 meters and can accommodate vessels to 220 meters long with maximum 10 meters draft. Used for carriers of liquefied petroleum gas and liquefied natural gas, there is also a small berth available for sulfuric acid. On Port Marsa El Brega’s west side are Jetties 1 and 2 with a total length of 334 meters with alongside depth of 13.7 meters. They can accommodate vessels up to 30 thousand DWT and to 175 meters long with 10.5 draft. The jetties are used for loading ammonia and methanol and for unloading caustics and acids
