Port Overview

Morondava port is situated in a lagoon bordered by mangroves and frequented by wooden, gaff rigged “boutres.” The small vessels fall dry in front of the 110 m long quay at low water. The maximum draft for the Eliot Channel connecting the port with the open sea and the anchorage for larger vessels is given at 2.5 m (low tide).

A lighthouse at the southern shore of the channel entrance provides navigation guidance to the anchorage.

Arrival and departure at and from the port, which falls dry on low tide, is only possible at high tide.

Port Performance

Neither the port nor private companies at Morondava can provide container moving equipment (tug/barges, mobile crane). Lightering the containers into barges at the anchorage off Morondava, towing the barges into the lagoon, lifting the containers onto the quay and manually stripping the containers there either onto trucks or into a warehouse would be an interesting option - given the ports paved surface (approx. 4,000 m²) and two available warehouses of 250 m² each.

Presently cargo is manhandled between truck and boutre without interim storage.

Beachers could be moored on the southern shore inside the entrance to the lagoon close to the Morondava, Eliot Channel connecting sea and river port Morondava port end of a paved road to allow for manual unloading or stripping of containers.
