Currently Riga is the only port used by WFP Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan. However as result of current (still valid) restrictions by Russia to import cargoes via Riga, other regional ports should be considered. These include Black Sea ports in Georgia, Indian Ocean ports in Iran and Pakistan, and ports on the east and southern coast of China. 


Poti, Georgia on the Black Sea should be considered. Tajikistan has significant amount of commercial trade via this corridor, particularly its major imports of alumina ore and exports of aluminum.  The corridor involves rail shipment from Poti on the Black Sea to Baku, Azerbaijan on the Caspian Sea, then rail ferry to Turkmenbashi, Turkmenistan and rail movement across Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan to Dushanbe.

There are commercial movements of containerized and non-containerized cargos from the Iranian port of Banderabas to Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan by both rail and truck.  Rail movements has the disadvantage that containers or cargos must be transloaded to other railcars at the Turkmenistan border due to different railroad gauges. Traceability of cargo is reportedly poor.

There is regular direct rail freight service from China’s east coast ports to western China commercial hub of Urumchi and to the city of Kashgar in the far southwest where the railroad ends.  From Urumchi and Kashgar there are regular truck movements. Speed, reliability and traceability of railroad shipments from Chinese ports inland are reportedly excellent. Lyanyungang in northern Shangong province and Guangzhou in the southern province of Guangdong have regular freight train departures to Urumchi. 

There are no current WFP assessments for these ports but information is readily available online. In the winter months there can be serious congestion at Lianyungang. 


Thanks to highway improvement there is increasing movements of commercial goods both ways between Pakistan and Tajikistan in transit across Afghanistan. Therefore, Pakistan ports are also an option to supply Tajikistan.
