3.2 Zambia Transporters | Digital Logistics Capacity Assessments

Since Zambia is a landlocked country it depends heavily on road transport companies for the haulage of heavy goods and supplies across Zambia and to the import and export business with neighbouring countries. The trucking industry has significantly grown in the last 5 years because of the infrastructure upgrade in the road sector and also triggered by the increase in the production of copper.

A Truckers Association of Zambia (TAZ) oversees policy issues for the industry. The petroleum transporters have their own association (PTAZ) which acts as an advocate and promotes the interest of petroleum truckers in the country. Drivers in the country are unionized in the National Union of Transport Allied Workers (NUTAW). Collective agreements are negotiated by individual companies. The union does not represent drivers for petroleum fuel trucks, they have a separate union.

While government policy upholds the SADC conventions of third country rule, etc, there are several instances of exemptions where temporary road service licenses are provided to Tanzanian companies.
