Milling sector in Tanzania is composed of two different sections – large scale mills and very small-scale mills at village level. There are very few medium size mills that are usually functioning below their installed capacity, but there is potential for sector needs to grow further. The large-scale milling sector is controlled by two main companies: Salim Bakhresa & Co Ltd and Azania. Their activities are mainly oriented on wheat milling even if they offer diversified products.
On the other side, the small-scale millers are present all over the country. Their activities vary in function of the regional agriculture products. Majority of Tanzania’s population use these mills for the household consumption. Indeed, they mill for small-scale farmers for home consumption and some local branded products, without any HACCP system in place. (WFP Milling Assessment report, 2016).

Capacity to Blend |
---|
The Mill is able to blend flour with other milled produce; this would be based on needs, the formulae and the activities of the mill at the timer of such a project. |
Loading & Discharge Rates |
---|
The Mill receives the wheat from the port directly from ship’s side in open 25 tons ‘Bulk’ road trucks, the bulk product is discharged direct to the intakes, maize is usually received in bags. The daily offtake by road from the mill is 80 trucks. Although the mill has rail siding and rail is the preferred method of transport, due to the operational constraints on the rail system all the transport for inward wheat, maize and outward transport of the milled products is transported by road. Transport from Source Grain will be imported from an international estimation; the grain will be discharged in bulk through hoppers into Bulk road trucks conveyed to the mill and discharged through the intakes into the silos. Grain that is purchased from within Tanzania will be delivered by road trucks to the mills in bags, the bags will then be slit across the stitching and bled into the intakes. Rail is not used at present as the Tanzania rail System is unable to offer a sustainable and reliable rail service. |
Transport Capacity at Mill |
---|
The mill is able to load and dispatch 60/80 road vehicles per day, a similar number of road vehicles may be received and discharged into the facility. |
