Overview

Burkina Faso offers a variety of storage solutions from the private to the public sector to meet the humanitarian needs across the country. In general, storages are concrete buildings and meet the minimum storage conditions. Renting or loaning land to install a mobile storage unit is also a practical option. In the private sector, storage solutions come from merchants in import/export, cement companies, wholesalers or logistics companies. In the public sector, Ministry of Agriculture, SONAGESS (Société Nationale de Gestion du Stock de Sécurité Alimentaire ) or the CAMEG (Centrale d'Achat des Médicaments Essentiels Génériques et des Consommables Médicaux) have a network of storage across the country. Therefore, it is recommended to explore both sectors when sourcing a storage solution. In addition, national humanitarian organizations are highly active in country with strong local connections and they often have some storage in remote areas. Therefore, they can provide temporary storage solutions to any organization during short term operations like distributions. Key to find and identify a storage is to contact all the economic actors within the new area of operation regardless of private or public sector.

Storage Used by Humanitarian Organizations

Humanitarian organizations run their own warehouses to store the commodities by renting through the private sector. In some areas, renting or loaning land to erect a mobile storage unit is also an alternative solution. In addition, some logistics companies offer a full warehousing service including labors, storage facilities and stock reports.

Public Sector Storage

The public sector can offer a storage solution to humanitarian organizations if space is available at the time of request. The main identified sources are the SONAGESS , the Ministry of Agriculture and the CCI who have a large storage capacity across the country. It is recommended to visit their local representative to verify the space availability then to make an official request at regional/national level. Their facilities meet the standard minimum requirement of storage with buildings in good condition (concrete, large doors, well ventilated and easy access for trucks).
For medical, the CAMEG meets the good storage practices for pharmaceuticals and offers a full solution from procurement to distribution with their own fleet.

In Ouagadougou, the CCI - through its department Plateforme Economique et de la Facilitation - offers storage capacity in several areas either under their direct management or rented to a third party (DGD, Bolloré, etc) Ouagareinter: three warehouse (5000 m² each) and rented to the DGD, CAMEG and one is dedicated for duty free. Ouagadougou train station: three warehouses (6745 m², 6828 m² and 1200 m²) and rented to the DGD and Bolloré. The smallest one is dedicated to parcels carried on by the train passengers. Ouagadougou airport: two warehouses (1400 m² and 950 m²) and rented to the DGD. Koudougou: one warehouse (1047 m²) under CCI management. Bitou land border crossing: one warehouse (650 m²) under CCI management. A project to build a multimodal dry port in Ouagadougou (total is 300 ha) is ongoing with an expected opening in 2025. The site will offer a storage capacity of 30 000 m², a bonded area, a container terminal, several parkings, office and administrative buildings, a free zone and a hall dedicated for exporting foods and agricultural products.

Region Centre

Cold Chain

The Ministry of Health is already fitted with cold chain equipment at national level and keeps increasing its capacity under the Programme Elargi de Vaccination (PEV) (see here the press release). In addition, the CAMEG is offering cold chain solution with cold room or controlled room within their medical warehouses to humanitarian organizations if needed.
