Generic Information:
The Republic of Yemen, commonly known as Yemen, is an Arab country located in Western Asia, occupying the southwestern to southern end of the Arabian Peninsula. It is bordered by Saudi Arabia to the north, the Red Sea to the west, and Oman to the east. Yemen is considered one of the poorest countries in the Arab world.
Yemen is a low-income, food-deficit and least developed country, ranking 154 out of 187 countries on the 2011 UNDP Human Development Index. For the past five years Yemen has ranked highest in the world on the Global Gender Gap Index. The rates of acute malnutrition for children under 5 are among the third highest in the world, stunting rates are second only to Afghanistan and the rate of underweight children is third highest, following India and Bangladesh. Infant and under 5 mortality rates are estimated at 76 and 102 per 1,000 live births, respectively. Maternal mortality is also high, at 570 deaths per 100,000 mothers.
The humanitarian situation in Yemen is becoming increasingly complex. In 2011, the country experienced a political crisis and widespread civil unrest, resulting in violent urban clashes between government forces, anti-government protesters and tribal elements. This led to massive and protracted displacements nationwide. High food prices (which increased by 47 percent since January 2011 and last upto January 2012) and shortages of fuel also exacerbated already critical levels of food insecurity. Furthermore, the ongoing conflict in the southern governorate of Abyan between government forces and militants affiliated with Al-Qaeda escalated, leading to the displacement of over 100,000 persons. In addition, over 400,000 internally displaced persons (IDPs) and war-affected individuals from the conflict in Yemen's northern region continue to be in dire need of emergency assistance.
To effectively respond to the humanitarian situation and based on the results from the 2011 Comprehensive Food Security Survey (CFSS) conducted between November and December 2011, WFP Yemen operations were significantly scaled up. Specifically, activities under PRRO 200038 will be immediately rolled into EMOP 200306 and the seasonal emergency food safety net (ESN) caseload expended to 4.7 million beneficiaries in the 13 most food insecure governorates. The EMOP will be extended for 6 months into 2013 (until end June 2013).
