Overview

Wheat is the most demanded cereal in Ecuadorian households, due to being a component for first necessity products. The highest production is located in the following provinces: Bolivar, Chimborazo, Cotopaxi, Imbabura and Carchi.

Ecuador is a minor wheat producer*. Only 1.13% of the national demand comes from the Ecuadorian countryside. The rest is imported, mainly, from Canada, the United States and Argentina. There are 694,000 tons that are demanded per year in Ecuador for various uses in milling, according to data from the Ministry of Agriculture. In Ecuador, 78% of imported wheat goes to milling for flour, and of that segment 55% is to produce bread and 24% for pasta. In 2019, Ecuador imported $323M in wheat, mainly from Canada ($188M), United States ($107M), Argentina ($21.7M), Ukraine ($6.54M), and Peru ($30.6k). Wheat imports are growing at an average annual rate of 13.08

According to Ecuadorian temporary law wheat import is not subject to duty custom taxes.  This tax exemption has been extended until December 31st 2024.

(*)Few countries are self-sufficient in wheat: China is the world's largest wheat producer, but it is also the world's largest importer.
