As a landlocked country whose area is covered 90% by mountains, Tajikistan has no seaports and very little in the way of river transport. 

The only regular navigation is on the Pyanj River, which constitutes much of the border between Afghanistan and Tajikistan. There is a ferry border crossing from Farhod in Khatlon Province. 

The company Tajikvneshtrans formerly operated 3 barges at the Nijny Pyanj border crossing where a bridge was built in 2004. 

Aga Khan AKAH Afghanistan makes use of 2 motorized rubber rafts for shuttling food aid deliveries across the Pyanj River to remote villages at 12 unofficial crossing points between GBAO and Afghan Badakshan that are supervised by police and customs officers on both sides.
