Airport Overview

The José Joaquín de Olmedo International Airport (Aeropuerto Internacional José Joaquín de Olmedo in Spanish) is located 5 km to the north of Guayaquil, the largest and the most populous city of Ecuador. It has a runway of 2,790 meters (9154 ft), and an elevation of 5 meters (16 ft). Together with Quito airport, it handles most of Ecuador’s international and domestic flights. During 2019, around 4 million passengers passed through the airport.  The airport is capable of handling up to 7.5 million passengers per year.

The airport is on the Avenida de las Américas, 5 kilometres (3.1 miles) north of Guayaquil's centre. The runway length of 2,684 metres (9,150 ft) includes a 240 metres (790 ft) displaced threshold on Runway 21 and a 100 metres (330 ft) displaced threshold on Runway 03. The airport is in the broad delta of the Guayas River, with level terrain in all quadrants. The parking platform is made of concrete about 35 cm thick and 600 metres long and 80 metres wide which has an area of 48,000 m², has a strip of asphalt for access and a vehicular street, all of which was built in compliance with the rules established by the General Directorate of Civil Aviation (DGAC) and the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).

The Daular International Airport is a proposed development project for the Ecuadorian city of Guayaquil. It is intended that the new airport will replace the current Jose Joaquin de Olmedo Airport upon its completion. The master plan for the Guayaquil International Airport calls for shifting the airport facility to a nearby 2,020 hectare site. The new airport, anticipated to be constructed in 2024 with an estimated investment of $800m, will have three runways and will be capable of handling 16 million passengers per year. Nevertheless the new intercontinental airport in Daular (26 kilometres out of town) will not be inaugurated in 2024, as originally scheduled. The plans were affected by the falling passenger arrival numbers in the existing airport, José Joaquín de Olmedo. The project overview consists of two parallel runways 4,100 and 2,500 metres in length and 36 gates for embarkment.
