Airport Overview
Río Amazonas Airport is an airport serving Shell Mera, a town in the Pastaza Province of Ecuador. The airport was established in 1937 by Royal Dutch Shell and abandoned in 1948. In 1949 the Mission Aviation Fellowship, a Christian missionary group, established themselves in the area and used the airport as their main base. The Río Amazonas Airport (Shell-Mera) is the main means of transportation for the entry and exit of the indigenous population of Pastaza. A total of seven ethnic groups, including the Achuar, Andoa, Shuar, Kichwa, Shiwiar, Waorani, Zápara and around 320 communities settle in the Ecuadorian Amazon and are the beneficiaries of the air terminal. Rio Amazonas Airport is only operational during daylight hours, from 06:00 to 18:00.
Aircraft take off from this terminal to authorized runways such as: Nuevo Curintza, Montalvo, Wiririma, Moretecocha, Pindoyacu, Jandiayacu, Makusar, Yusutnza, Lorocachi, Moretecocha, Llanchamacocha, Nuevo Curintza, Sarayacu, Masaramo, Llanchamacocha, among others. The trip can last between 30 minutes to 1 hour of flight depending on the distance from the slopes and the climatic conditions of the region. The Pastaza VOR-DME (Ident: PAV) is located 0.91 nautical miles (1.69 km) off the approach threshold of Runway 30. The Pastaza non-directional beacon (Ident: PTZ) is located 0.78 nautical miles (1.44 km) off the same runway.
Companies such as Alas de Socorro (SAMAFE), Aerokashurco, Aeroconexos, AeroFor, Aero Sarayaku operate at the airport. It is also used by the Army Air Group GAE No. 44 “Pastaza” that supplies various military detachments and is the direct connection with other Army units.
During 2020, 11,627 air operations were carried out with a mobilization of 5,578 passengers and transportation of 12,8239 kg.
Some of the main services of the airport are a medical service and fast-tracked security clearance. In case of any emergency the fire station and ambulances have a prompt response.
