Airport Overview
Kale lies in a rustic part of Sagaing Division, very close to the border with Chin State and it is the primary gateway to northern Chin State. Kale Airport is the only one airport that located in the middle of the town in Myanmar. Condition of the runway is good. There are two domestic airlines; Myanmar National Airline and Air KBZ that fly to Kale from/to Yangon and Mandalay. The two airlines operate regular flights on regular basis during the week to Mandalay and Yangon. There is no designated helipad in place at Kale. However, the apron area (91 x 76 meter) can be arranged for VIP flight with prior approval from Department of Civil Aviation in Yangon which takes about minimum 5 working days. The airport is shared with the military (on the other side of the airport), the military has a small storage facility of 33mx8m (100ft x 25ft). Department of Civil Aviation is expanding Kale airport terminal to enable it to handle more passengers since current terminal (120 ft x 60 ft) can handle only around 80 passengers. When the construction of the new expanded airport terminal is complete (120 ft x 100 ft), it can potentially double its current capacity. The construction of terminal expansion is planned to be completed in Sep 2020.
There is a minimum cargo handling equipment mainly to support passenger services in this airport. The largest plane that can be handled is a medium-sized 100-seat planes such as EMB-190, but more commonly used is a 78-seat twin-engine turboprop plane such as ATR-72. The runway is made of Bitumen and strength (PCN) is approximately 33 Metric ton. The airport security is handled by Myanmar police.
