Home

Port Overview

On May 11, 2011, the Concession Agreement for the design, construction, financing, conservation and operation of the North Multipurpose Terminal of the Port of Callao was signed between the company APM Terminals Callao S.A. and the Ministry of Transport and Communications, with a validity of 30 years. The modality by which the Concession is delivered is called "DBFOT" (Design, Build, Finance, Operate and Transfer), which includes, in addition to the maritime and land area of the concession, the infrastructure and port equipment that it contains, so that it designs, build, finance, maintain, operate and exploit the terminal, having to transfer said infrastructure and equipment to the Peruvian State at the end of the Concession Contract.

The TNM project comprises four central docks, a north dock, a hydrocarbon dock and a grain dock, with their respective backing areas. This terminal is designed for handling of containerized cargo and general cargo (metals, grains, fertilizers, chemicals, among others). During the term of the concession, APMT must make a benchmark investment of USD 895.6 million dollars, distributed in five stages of the modernization project. On July 1, 2011, the Concessionaire began rendering services in the TNM, operating the existing infrastructure that was received as a result of the granting of the concession.

As a result of the measures applied both in Peru and in various parts of the world to combat the COVID-19 pandemic, various sectors of the economy suffered a series of impacts that, to a greater or lesser extent, also had effects on the demand for maritime transport infrastructure services. Thus, in the case of the TNM, during 2020 the terminal served a total of 1,502 ships, which translates into a reduction of 10.4% compared to 2019, and mobilized around 17.79 million tons of cargo and 854.9 thousand TEUs of containers, representing a contraction of 7.0% and 4.9%, respectively, with respect to what was mobilized in the year 2019.

Multipurpose Terminal

Regarding the behaviour of the volumes of cargo mobilized in the Multipurpose Port Terminal Muelle Norte, during 2020 there was a contraction of 7.0% compared to what was registered in 2019, going from 19.13 to 17.79 million tons, respectively. In this regard, it should be taken into account that said result has been influenced by the restriction measures of economic activities imposed in the framework of the fight against COVID-19, in particular during the first months of the entry into force of the State of National Emergency.

The volume of rolling cargo (Ro - Ro) mobilized by the TNM amounted to 203 thousand tons in 2020, which represented a significant reduction of 36.4% compared to that registered in 2019. In this regard, although this reduction was influenced by the restrictions in the framework of the COVID-19 pandemic, it should also be noted that the historical trend observed for this type of cargo had a decrease since 2014, registering an average annual decrease of 1.29% between 2014 and 2019.

Grain and Bulk Handling

During 2020, the volume of solid bulk cargo handled by the TNM amounted to 5.71 million tons, which represented a reduction of 4.95% compared to that registered in 2019. Also note that all of the Solid bulk cargo volumes mobilized during 2020 corresponded to imports.

In 2020, the volume of liquid bulk cargo handled by the TNM amounted to 2.38 million tons, which represented a reduction of 11.2% with respect to that registered in 2019. In this regard, although said reduction in Volumes were influenced by the restrictions presented in the framework of the pandemic worldwide, registering an average annual decrease of 4.52% in recent years.
