Port Performance
The activities at the port have been increasing over the last few years. In 2016, they recorded 60,000 containers transiting by the port or the equivalent of 75,000 TEU including the break bulk cargo. In average, 130 vessels transit through the port of Melinda. Vessels up to 200 meters of length and 10 meters draft can berth. The port rarely encounters congestion problems. However, during the rainy season, the loading/offloading operations can be affected. The average waiting time between arrival and berthing is 2 to 3 days.

Terminal Information
Multipurpose Terminal
Port of Malindi is a multipurpose terminal handling transit passengers, cargo and containers. Since the port area is limited and the 2 berths are next to each other (one for cargo, the other one for ferries and passengers’ boats), it makes the port management more complex.

Main Storage Terminal
There is no storage within the perimeter of the port for bulk or break-bulk cargo. There are two port sheds that are used for the storage of imported motor vehicles. The quay for the imports of regional imports has limited customs shed space for the temporary storage of any items that are imparted from the region and are delayed pending final clearances. Import containers are stripped in ‘stacks‘ and the contents of the containers are loaded direct to road vehicles which then transport the customs cleared items out of the Port.
Empty containers are presently being stored in an open area which is approximately 50 metres from the Harbor entrance, the area is uneven and said to have a capacity for 2,000 TEU on a ground space of 26,400 m2, the area is on open ground with no fencing or security thus unsuitable for the stooge of laden containers.
Stevedoring
Stevedoring activities are provided by ZPC and mainly include the wharfage fees and the lifting of the containers.
Hinterland Information
The transport out of the port is mainly assumed by trucks.
Port Security
All persons working within the port area are ‘badged ‘, security at the gateway has a strong presence. Although the entire port is fenced, access by sea through the Dow / Small craft jetty may be considered as a weakness in the system.
