Port Overview

The Port of Yangon is the main port of Myanmar that handles approximately 90% of import and export activities in the country. The average tidal range is around 19 feet (5.85m) at sprint tide and 8.4 feet (2.5m) at neap tide. Waves within the Yangon river normally do not hinder marine operations, even at the river mouth point, wave conditions are rarely rough with less than 2-meter height. Current velocity ranges between 4 to 6 knots during springtime. Pilotage is compulsory for vessels above 200 GRT. Navigation is provided from the offshore fixed Pilot station located 20 nautical miles from Yangon, which can handle traffic of around 600 vessels every month. Currently, the port has capacity for vessels of up to 15,000 –20,000 DWT and works are scheduled to increase the port’s capacity for vessels up to 35,000 DWT.

There are two restricted bars along the approached channel:
(1) Inner Bar (near Yangon Port at Monkey Point)
(2) Outer Bar (at the mouth of the River)

Crossing both the inner and outer bar is timed for high tide to allow sufficient depth. Since the channel width at Monkey Point is rather limited at 100 meters, navigation requires close attention.

The Port of Yangon maintain 2 shifts. Day shift is from 08:00 hours to 16:00 hours. Night shift is from 20:00 hours to 04:00 hours. Overtime works is available on request for periods between shift hours. It takes a week to discharge cargo from port since arrive if all require document (such as Shipping documents and government approve letter) are complete. Yangon Port is free from congested, generally. But all port located in Yangon has pros and cons.

Yangon port is divided into two ports. The largest is the Myanmar International Terminal Thilawa, used mostly for RORO ships for transporting cars from nearby automotive factories. This port is located 16 km from Yangon downtown and river bay. It is strategically located next to the Thilawa Special Economic Zone developed by a Japanese Joint-venture company. The International Terminal Thilawa consists of 2 terminals and 6 wharfs and accessible to vessels of 200 m LOA, 20000 DWT, 9 m Draft: The current traffic level at MITT does not pose congestion risk as yet with vacant container yard space available.. However, since MITT is located outside of Yangon, transport cost and longer travel distance Should be expected.

The other is the old Yangon port area, which covers 4 terminals and 15 wharfs. Most general cargo vessels use Myanmar Industrial Port (MIP) and Asia World Port terminal (AWP) because they are located close to downtown at 32km from the Yangon river bay. The old Yangon Port area covers the following 4 terminals and 15 wharfs and accessible to vessels of 167m LOA, 9m Draft, 15000 DWT:

(5)  Asia World Port Terminal (AWPT)

(6)  Sule Pagoda Wharf (SPW)

 

Regarding the coastal and inland water transport cargo and passenger are handled from downtown domestic terminal such as Lamadaw, Pansodan, and Botathaung. Especially, Pansodan and Botathaung are where passenger transport is the major operation are situated very close to the city area. But Lamadaw handle almost all domestic cargo though cargo handling area is quite narrow.

Further to the above-mentioned ports, there are two dry ports available in Ywar Thar Gyi in Yangon region and Myit Nge in Mandalay region built by Resources Group Logistics Co., Ltd. It was officially opened in November 2018 to boost logistics capabilities in country with a rail line operated by Myanma Railways. The dry ports are intended to ease traffic jam between ports in Yangon and Thilawa SEZ and to reduce transportation cost. It is equipped with customs inspections and 24-hour services with freight charges and taxes set by Myanmar Railways. The loop-train service runs on a weekly basis with 15-27 carriages between the 2 ports. Carriage capacity is around 33 metric tons.

Yangon Dry Port: Ywar Thar Gyi Terminal

Port Overview 

The Ywar Thar Gyi dry port started operating in 2018 under a 50-year agreement with Myanmar Railway under a Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) system and provides a one-stop service for cargo handling and logistics solutions for international export and import, as well as domestic distribution. They offer scheduled rail transportation services between Yangon and Mandalay through their two ports, Ywar Thar Gyi and Myitnge. They offer the package services of custom service, warehouse service, and transport service. Custom office will be opened at Ywar Thar Gyi and Myitnge ports soon. They own a total of 100 containers in 20ft and 40ft. Currently the Yangon dry port is running with 28 permanent staff and 12 laborers. ISO certificates process is ongoing.

Myanmar International Terminal Thilawa (MITT) 

Port Overview

MITT is Myanmar’s first purpose-built, multi-purpose international container port. Hutchison Port Holdings (HPH), which developed the facilities, has managed MITT since 1998. MITT is located at Thilawa 25 km for downtown Yangon, close to mouth of the Yangon River, and adjacent to the Special Industrial Zone, Thanlyin-Kyauktan. Most container traffic in Myanmar is handled by AWPT and MIP ports, not by MITT, because these ports are located closer to downtown Yangon and businesses active in Bayint Naung Compound, Hlaing Thar Yar Industrial Zone.

MITT is the only port in Myanmar that can handle RORO (Roll-on Roll-off) car carriers.

Same as other ports, customs office is set up and customs officers are available within office hours, but it can vary and depend on workload. Customs clearance time normally takes one week since Myanmar Automated Cargo Clearance System (MACCS) system in place.

Containers are moved out of the port by trucks and there is also a container barge service between MITT and Shweyi Thar and Hlaing Tharyar Industrial Zone in Yangon. On top of that, MITT facilitate container trucking service and inland shipping barges for cost effective and efficient movement of cargoes.

Myanmar Integrated Port Limited (MIPL) Overview

MIPL is located next to MITT port and started since 1998. MIPL facilities are designed to handle general cargo such as steel, heavy equipment, and vehicles. This port is rarely used for other cargo and passenger transport.

Stevedoring

MIPL employs permanent stevedore gangs on 2 shifts basis, day shift 08:00 am to 04:00 pm and night shift 08:00 pm to 04:00 am hours. Bo Aung Kyaw Street Wharf (BAK) / TMT Port

Port Overview

Bo Aung Kyaw port is under management of Myanmar Economics Holdings that (MEH) and located at Botahtaung Township, Yangon.

TMT port is under the management of KT Services & Logistics Co., Ltd (Fully Owned Subsidiary of KT Group) and located at Botahtaung Township, Yangon. Previously port was called Bo Aung Kyaw and operated by Myanmar Economics Holdings. KT Services & Logistics acquired the rights to manage and operate the port on 2016 for five years contract from MEH and changed the port name to TMT ports. It has weekly container vessels and break-bulk vessels connectivity to Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, China, Vietnam, India and Bangladesh. They have 3 Berths capable to serve container and general cargo vessels ranging from 137 to 183 meters. They can provide the loading and unloading facilities of container and general cargo including heavy-lift project cargo.

The Asia World Port Terminal (AWPT) is located upstream of the Yangon River, situated at about 32 kilometers inland from Elephant Point on the Gulf of Martaban.

The water depth alongside the wharves is 9.5 meters in accordance with the maximum draft of the Yangon River. Boats with with a draft of exceeding 9.5 meters cannot be accommodated at the Yangon old port area. Most of the berths are designed for General Cargo.

The handling equipment at AWPT is managed by the private company: Asia World Co. Ltd. The AWPT offers a variety of facilities and handling equipment plus three mobile harbour cranes to cater to break-bulk, container, dry and liquid bulk operations. It does not have any dock-side cranes or container gantry cranes.

Multipurpose Terminal

RoRo facilities are not available at AWPT. There are fuel storage tanks and liquid cargo handling facilities.

Main Storage Terminal

Stevedoring

No stevedoring companies are available at AWPT port. Cargo handling is done by workers of the Township Labour Exchange Office, which is controlled by the ministry of Labour. Daily labour rates is 5,000-10,000 Kyats.

Hinterland Information / multi-modal

The terminal facilities of AWPT are in the heart of Yangon City, within 15 minutes drive to the City Hall and 30 minutes drive to Mingaladon International Airport, yet just outside of the downtown area, thus avoiding rush hour traffic. AWPT is within easy reach of Bayint Naung Commercial Centre, Hlaing Tharyar Industrial Development Region, Shwe Pyithar Industrial Estate, Mingaladon Industrial Park, Pyinmabin Industrial Complex and South Dagon Industrial Zone.

Asia World Co. Ltd. is responsible for AWPT port security. The port compound is fenced with concrete wall.

 

Myanmar Industrial Port (MIP) Overview

Port Overview

Myanmar Industrial Port (MIP) is located close to downtown Yangon. MIP Container Terminal and the Inland Container Depot of Myanmar Annawa Swan-er-shin Group (MAS) –was opened on Jan 2003. MIP handles mainly containers: It has two containers terminals that can handle two container ships at one time and a third is under construction expected to be completed in 2015. There is a container yard, a container freight station and an inspection bay. MIP can handle ships up to 15,000 GRT at the terminals. There are safety and fire prevention systems at the port and a clinic.

Berthing Specifications

For Terminal 3 there are 748,668 sq.m. (185 acres) under construction. Together with terminal 1 & 2, the total capacity is expected to increase to 1,200 TEU per day. Upon completion of Terminal 3, expected in 2015, with an extra 1,800m wharf, the entire MIP wharf will be 2,800m (2.8km) long.

 Terminal 1: Can handle 2 x 15,000 GRT container ships at one time.
Terminal 2: Land area is 291,374 sqm (72 acres).

MIP Port handling is managed by the private company: Myanmar Annawa Swan-er-shin Group (S) Co Ltd (MAS). There are four ship-to-shore quay cranes, eight mobile harbour cranes and four boom cranes. In addition there are sufficient gantry cranes, reach stackers and forklifts as specified below.

There are no multi-purpose handling facilities available.

Grain and Bulk Handling

There are no grain and bulk handling facilities available.

Main Storage Terminal

Total land area: 6,142m2. Including a 6-storey customs-bonded warehouse of 22,297 sq.m., 183m by 122m (600 ft. x 400 ft). The area of container yard and the terminal is 102,385 square meters and the area of container freight station is 6,140 square meters. About 3,260 containers can be stored per section, for total capacity of 8,120 containers in three sections. Fifty-two containers can be inspected simultaneously at the inspection bay.

Stevedoring

Myanmar Annawa Swan-er-shin Group (S) Co Ltd (MAS) provides all container handling and stevedoring activities, such as stuffing and un-stuffing containers.

Hinterland Information / multi-modal

Containers are moved out of the port by trucks. There is no railway connection available. Containers are not transported inland via waterways, because the river ports do not have container handling capacity, nor the required equipment.

Port Security

MAS group is responsible for port security. The port compound is fenced with a high concrete wall. The compound is controlled by a gate with port security.

Sule Pagoda Wharf (SPW)

Sule Pagoda wharf is located at 16.7675 and 96.01222 and controlled by Myanmar Port Authority (MPA). This port is used by ferry boats (Yangon to Dala route), wooden boats, and dredging vessels from MPA. No foreign going vessel uses this wharf. It is very close to Bo Aung Kyaw Port (BAK). No storage facilities, no port facilities. Wharf is pontoon type.
