Port Overview

Ebeye port in RMI is a secondary international port in Kwajalein Atoll currently handles 700 TEUs annually. The port is situated on the leeward, lagoon shore of Ebeye Island on the southern corner of Kwajalein atoll. It is 5.5 km from the US military port of Kwajalein and 442 km from the Port of Majuro. It supports both inter-island ferry services and international and inter-island container and general cargo trades, including fuel. Kwajalein Atoll Port Authority (KAPA), which is under the Kwajalein Atoll Local government and the Kwajalein Atoll Development Authority (KADA), is responsible for Ebeye port.

The wharf has a length of 120 m (400 feet) with a width of 36.5 m (120 feet). The container yard is around 4,380 m2 (48,000 square feet). A smaller ‘L-shaped’ wharf to the north is used by domestic vessels and the ferry from Kwajalein.

Water depth around the main operational area, to the western side of the wharf, varies from around 12 m to 17 m, before deepening to the west.

4 – RoRo landing

Passenger ferry services to and from Kwajalein Island operated by the US Army run six days per week about 10 times per day. The ferry service is open and free of charge to the public.

The main Ebeye dock is basic and open with basic handling equipment. No reach stacker is available at the time of writing this report.

World Bank is funding a Maritime Safety and Security (est. US$7.65 million) project to strengthen safety and security of maritime transport and support. World Bank funding also aims to improve security with fence construction, extra lighting, as well as a standby generator. There are also plans to construct a warehouse (30x30 feet) for use as transit storage and equipment parking, as well as expanding the terminal for passengers.

There is a RoRo landing approx. 550 metres north from the Ebeye Dock, next to the gas station. It is approx. 35 metre wide and receives landing crafts and RoRo vessels to load/unload, mainly heavy equipment.

There is a ramp in Gauguegue, 8 Km from Ebeye, however, it is not operational and would require significant investment to repair.

The Port Authority is a state-owned enterprise and is responsible for the development, maintenance and operation of all seaports. RMIPA reports to the Minister of Transportation and Communications and is governed by a seven-member Board of Directors appointed by the Cabinet. The day-to-day operations are managed by an executive director and staff of 60.

Port Performance

Ebeye dock currently handles around 700 TEUs per year. The dock is approximately 120m long and currently services international cargo vessels enroute from Majuro and Guam as well as domestic shipping vessels that deliver a wide variety of imported food and household items, construction equipment and materials, and diesel fuel. Local stevedores (KASCO) process the loading and unloading on Ebeye Dock.

There are two scheduled freight vessel services per month. All containers are unloaded directly by the vessel. There is very limited container handling capability and subsequently containers are unloaded at the dock edge in situ due to the inability to move containers about the dock area.
